A NIGHT FULL OF STARS

The Michelin Guide Gala in Spain awards 34 new stars

On the night of 28 November, Barcelona was full of chefs (already starred or waiting to get their first star) who came to the city to attend the Michelin Guide Gala in Spain. With a presenter and a luxury stage, Andreu Buenafuente and the Auditori Fèrum, more than a hundred chefs came together on this night so awaited by those in their profession.

This year is also a historic one, as it is the first time that Spain and Portugal have held individual galas and not joint galas. The Portuguese will have their turn on 27 February in the Algarve. The gastronomic coordinators of the gala were Jordi Cruz (ABaC, Three Michelin Star), the brothers Sergio and Javier Torres (Cocina Hermanos Torres, Three Michelin Star and Una Estrella Verde) and Paolo Casagrande (Lasarte, Three Michelin Star).

The choice of Barcelona as the venue was not trivial, as the city has three restaurants with three Michelin stars, specifically the three restaurants, or rather the three chefs in charge of gastronomically coordinating the gala.

Before the gala, Spain had 13 restaurants with three stars, 34 with two stars and 235 with one star. The lucky starred chefs include the likes of Martín Berasategui, Jesús Sánchez and Cristóbal Muñoz, three of the more than 40 chefs featured in our latest Gastrochef by Gary's catalogue.

At the end of the night the numbers were as follows:

  • 15 Three Stars.
  • 32 Two Stars.
  • 224 One Star.

This year we have two new additions to the Olympus of the Three Stars, which brings the total number of restaurants holding this award in our country to fifteen. At the gala on the 28th, Paco Morales' Noor restaurant (Córdoba) and Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casañas' Disfrutar (Barcelona) welcomed the third macaron. We also have a new incorporation in the Two Star section, Venta Moncalvillo by Ignacio and Carlos Echapresto (Daroca de Rioja). Finally, Spain has 31 new restaurants with one Michelin star, three of which have fallen in the province of Jaén, two in the capital (Radis, Malak) and one in Baeza (Vandelvira).

In addition to the traditional red stars, since 2020 the so-called green stars have been awarded, which reward the commitment of the restaurants that receive them to sustainability and the environment. This year, 12 new stars have been awarded, which, added to the existing ones, bring the total number of stars awarded in Spain to 49.

But the gala is not only about stars, in addition to crowning restaurants with their corresponding stars (red or green), the night also brought us a series of awards that recognise the work of mentors, dining room staff and promising young chefs. Thus, the mentor chef award went to Juan Mari Arzak of Arzak (Donostia), the dining room award went to Joan Carles Ibáñez of the Lasarte restaurant (Barcelona), the Young Chef award went to Martina Puigvert of the Le Cols restaurant (Olot), and the award for best sommelier went to Josep "Pitu" Roca, one of the Roca brothers of the famous "El Celler de Can Roca".

In addition to awarding stars to restaurants and prizes to various talents in and out of the kitchen, the Michelin Guide also keeps a section for restaurants, bars and cafés whose quality and good service make them worthy of such a distinction. We are talking about the well-known mentions in the guide as well as the Bib Gourmand and El Plato Michelin awards. This year's additions to these categories include Restaurante Abarike (Gijón) run by Lara Roguez (page 34 of the Gastrochef by Gary's catalogue), Fernando Martín's Eximio restaurant (page 10 of the Gastrochef by Gary's catalogue) and Seve Díaz's restaurant El Taller de Seve Díaz (page 9 of the Gastrochef by Gary's catalogue), among other.

However, it is not all good news, with 11 restaurants losing their star. Some by closure, others by moving and others by decision of the guide's inspectors. The eleven restaurants that have lost their award in the Michelin Guide 2024 are:

  • Angle (Barcelona)
  • Lúa (Madrid)
  • Gofio (Madrid)
  • El Lago (Marbella)
  • El Nuevo Molino (Puente Arce)
  • La Cuina de San Simón (Tossa de Mar)
  • Arbidel (Asturias)
  • Odéon (Murcia)
  • Zurberoa (Oiartzun)
  • Espacio N (Huesca)
  • Capdepera (Baleares)
